UK And Sri Lankan Expats Celebrate AED 155,554 Winnings With Emirates Draw

Shock followed by jubilation were the reactions of two of last week’s raffle draw winners who each won AED 77,777 from the UK and Sri Lanka, when they were notified that they had won during Emirates Draw’s latest livestream draw.

Edward Helsby, a civil engineer, and Mohamed Usman, a salesperson, both the long-term residents of the UAE, learnt about their good fortune when a congratulatory email arrived in their inboxes.

“I actually won AED 77 two weeks ago when I matched two numbers [out of seven],” said Mohamed, a 31-year-old from Sri Lanka, adding that once he saw the message, he couldn’t contain his excitement.

“My wife saw my expression and even though I tried not to say anything to her, she took my phone and was very happy when she read my message. I wanted to surprise her, but it didn’t work out,” Usman added, laughing. The father of two plans to use his winnings to pay off some loans and gift his wife some jewellery.

Edward, a 58-year-old from the UK, noted that he was surprised when he received his notification: “I didn’t believe it at first, I actually thought it was a scam. I shared it with my family and wife thought it was too, especially since I’ve entered numerous draws and competitions over the years but haven’t really won anything – recently, at least – except for a holiday to the US my wife won a few years ago.”

“I’ve already booked my tickets for the next four rounds. I’m going to keep participating with Emirates Draw because it’s for a good cause. Whatever happens, it’s still a win for nature…I like that local draws [here] are charity based. There’s a feeling of giving too even if one rarely receives!” Helsby, also a father of two, added.

While both men are planning to share their current winnings with their families, they’re still keen on participating to win the AED 100 million Grand Prize.

“I’m going to participate with Emirates Draw again while selecting randomly chosen numbers but I’m still thinking of what to do with my current prize!” said Usman, adding that should he win, he would share the amount with those close to him – family, relatives, and friends. “I’d like to go back to my country with whatever amount is left over and give it to my mom and dad, and also donate to causes to help my country,” he added.

Helsby revealed that should he win the Grand Prize then he would travel with his wife before donating the rest to charity.

“We’ve been postponing our vacation plans, which we had organised before COVID happened, so traveling is at the top of our list if I win,” he said, adding: “We will donate the remaining amount to different charitable causes and for cancer research.”

It is the largest Grand Prize in UAE history and till now remains available, giving optimistic participants another chance to try for the life-changing amount; the next round will be broadcast live on Sunday, February 6th, 2022, at 9pm UAE time.
